Kissing A Rattlesnake Will Change Your Life

As I began to read the news this morning, an unbelievable headline jumped from the page …..
“Man Bit On Tongue Trying To Kiss Rattlesnake”

The man who tried to kiss the rattlesnake had to be flown to the hospital, he was in critical condition and excruciating pain. A witness to the incident said that the snake kisser told observers he could “kiss the devil and get away with it.”

I know what you’re thinking. Someone would have to be insane to even try to kiss a rattlesnake! Of course, you are correct.  Rattlesnakes are dangerous, painful and potentially deadly. Keeping as much distance between your lips and a rattlesnake’s just makes sense. No matter how much “fun” you think it may be, or how daring you’d be to try it — there’s just no reasonable excuse to mess with the business end of a poison-filled killer.

Except that we do it all the time.

Oh, we may not actually try to kiss a poisonous snake, but we believe that we can “kiss the devil and get away with it.” He lures us with promises of fun, fame, and fortune if we’ll only ignore God’s Word — and we pucker right up.

Jesus warns us that the main focus of the enemy of our souls is to steal from us, kill us and destroy us. (John 10:10) Christ tells us that satan is a liar.  (John 8:44)  God clearly warns us in His word about the things that the enemy will use to try and destroy us, to poison us and bring us into places of excruciating pain.  In Galatians 5:19-21, Paul lists some of satan’s tactics, warning us that “the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,  idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,  envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.” There are other places in scripture where the warnings are made clear, as well. But we still pucker up.

Rattlesnakes are dangerous. Rattlesnakes are ALWAYS dangerous. Rattlesnakes can attack you whether or not you are aware of them. Rattlesnakes can inflict pain and suffering whether you believe in them or not.  You don’t have to agree with me about rattlesnakes, because your agreement (or disagreement) doesn’t change their venom one bit.

It has been said that years of experience can prepare you for most things, or that 10,000 hours of deliberate practice will let you master anything. But experience and skill cannot help you avoid a rattlesnake bite if you’re already in range of the snake. The strike from a rattlesnake travels between 7-14 feet per second.  Too quick for you to avoid except by sheer luck.

SIN is dangerous. Sin is ALWAYS dangerous, even when you don’t agree it is sin. In fact, one of the tricks I’ve seen satan use most frequently with great success is to convince us that sin is not really sin at all!  So pucker up.

Funny thing about rattlesnakes and sin, it doesn’t really matter what you call them. It doesn’t matter if you believe they’re dangerous. They don’t care. They will do what they do not matter what you believe.

Both sin and rattlesnake venom will cause incredible excruciating pain in your life. Both can be deadly. Both can be avoided. One way of avoiding them is to stand united as one body, watching out for one another. I speak about this in my book Count to ONE, God’s Plan for Christian Unity. We are stronger together.

Anyone who believes they can “kiss the devil and get away with it” is about to learn a painful lesson.

Take my advice – Don’t kiss rattlesnakes.
